U.S. sailor arrested for damaging private property

May 15, 2011
Police on May 14 arrested a U.S. sailor on the spot for destroying an office building in Yokosuka City, Kanagawa Prefecture.

The person arrested was a 21-year-old serviceman stationed at the U.S. Yokosuka Naval Base. He was drunk at the time of arrest.

According to building owner Shimizu Kaku, at about 2:00 a.m. on May 14 he heard a noise caused by the sailor breaking a window with his hand on the fifth floor. Noticing that he was bleeding and trying to get inside, Shimizu called the police.

At that time, Shimizu’s mother and wife were on the fifth floor.

“Since U.S. military personnel frequently commit crimes in this area, we are regularly holding patrols. The incident made me realize the frightening nature of their crimes,” said Shimizu.
