Ogata speaks at a peace forum in China

September 26, 2011
Japanese Communist Party Vice Chair Ogata Yasuo on September 24 made remarks at the Northeast Asia Peace and Development Forum sponsored by the Chinese People’s Association for Peace and Disarmament in the Chinese port city of Dalian.

Ogata emphasized the need to do away with the idea of military antagonism and establish a truly peaceful environment in Northeast Asia.

Ogata said that the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) has called on the international community to solve disputes through dialogue. This idea is gaining strength in all northeast Asian countries, he pointed out.

In regards to the Six-Party Talks, he said that the 6PT could be a permanent framework for peaceful negotiations for the region and expressed his hope for further development in regional relationships.

Leaders from NGOs, researchers, and government representatives in the region took part in the forum.
