JCP Kami: Negotiation with Russia on territories should be based on fact and reason

February 8, 2012
Japanese Communist Party lawmaker Kami Tomoko at a national rally calling for the return of the Russian-held northern territories stated that the JCP will work hard to pave the way for their return.

The rally was hosted by the Cabinet Office and six local organizations in Tokyo on February 7.

Kami mentioned that the territorial issue “was created in the first place by the former Soviet Union based on the Yalta Agreement which was in violation of the principle of non-territorial expansion, a major principle of post-war international law.”

She stressed, “It is important to negotiate with Russia based on historical facts and international law.”

In the rally, former residents of the disputed islands and representatives of the government and political parties expressed their determination to make further efforts to push for bilateral talks to realize the return of the territories to Japan.
