‘No’ to USMC deployment: Iwakuni City Assembly

March 22, 2012
The Iwakuni City Assembly on March 21 unanimously adopted a written opinion refusing to bear heavier military burdens in response to news reports that the U.S. and Japanese governments are considering moving 1,500 U.S. Marine Corps personnel from Okinawa to the Iwakuni base in Yamaguchi Prefecture.

The adopted document states that both citizens and the assembly of Iwakuni City have not been informed of the plan, and that if the leaked information turns out to be true, mutual trust between Iwakuni City and the Japanese government would be put at risk.

The document also requires that a training site for Field Carrier Landing Practice at the Iwakuni base not be constructed, and that Night Landing Practice exercises be prohibited at the base.
