The Japan Federation of Women’s Organizations on May 17 made representations to relevant government ministries and agencies to demand that they make serious efforts toward the improvement in status of women and the promotion of gender equality.
Meeting officials of the Cabinet Office and the Ministry of Health, Labor and Welfare, the Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries, the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology, and the Ministry of Justice, they requested the expansion of women’s participation in policy and decision making, and equal opportunity of employment and promotion.
On the same day, they submitted to Japanese Communist Party member of the House of Representatives Takahashi Chizuko 88,307 signatures calling for the right of a married couple to use separate surnames, the final settlement of ‘comfort women’ issues, and the ratification of the optional protocol to the Convention on the Elimination of all Forms of Discrimination against Women.
