JCP delivers money for Chinese quake victims

May 30, 2008
Japanese Communist Party Chair Shii Kazuo visited the Chinese Embassy in Tokyo on May 29 and handed over approximately 14 million yen the JCP has collected so far to support the victims of the earthquake in the Chinese province of Sichuan to Ambassador Cui Tiankai.

Shii explained that as part of its effort to help China’s quake-hit areas, the JCP has requested the government to do its utmost to help China and is using the Akahata newspaper to report on the situation in the quake-hit areas and raising funds for quake victims.

Cui said, “Please accept our deep thanks to JCP members for their kind concerns.”

He explained that the quake-hit areas urgently need tents and temporary housing units as well as efforts to prevent infectious diseases and collateral damage.

He said that in a longer-term perspective they would need to rebuild local communities that take into account disaster prevention and environment protection while recovering the industries and infrastructure. He also asked Japan to utilize its disaster prevention know-how and experience.
