‘Yanba dam money’ flowing back to LDP

November 13 & 16, 2009
Akahata has found out that local Liberal Democratic Party branches in Gunma Prefecture last year received 7.4 million yen in donations from 22 companies that won contracts for Yanba dam-related works.

This reveals that “Yanba dam money” was flowing back to the former ruling party.

It has been also discovered that 93 retired officials of the Land, Infrastructure, and Transportation Ministry were rehired under the so-called “amakudari” practice by 45 companies that were awarded contracts for work related to the Yanba dam.

The contracts awarded to those companies amounted to 14.8 billion yen in five years.

In five years, a total of 47 billion yen in contracts were given to firms for Yanba-dam related projects.

For instance, a company that gave donations to LDP branches headed by Obuchi Yuko (former minister dealing with the low birthrate) and Nakasone Hirofumi (former foreign minister) was awarded a contract of 77.5 million yen for building a water distribution facility. Two retired officials of the Land, Infrastructure, and Transportation Ministry have executive positions in this company.

A company that won Yanba dam-related contracts of 914 million yen had given donations to Nakasone and former Agriculture Minister Yatsu Yoshio.

Yanba dam-related contracts were also awarded to Kashima Corporation, Taisei Corporation, and Nishimatsu Construction Co., which had given donations to the LDP’s political funds management body, the People’s Political Association.
