JCP Ichida: Tokyo Governor Inose’s resignation does not end money scandal

December 20, 2013
Japanese Communist Party Secretariat Head Ichida Tadayoshi on December 19 in regard to Tokyo Governor Inose Naoki’s resignation after the revelation of his money scandal said that it is only natural that he resigned and that he should be held accountable for the illegal act.

In a press conference held in the Diet building, Ichida pointed out that discussions in the Tokyo Metropolitan Assembly aroused the suspicion that the governor provided benefits to medical corporation Tokushukai in regard to the sale of a hospital owned by TEPCO. Inose should not be allowed to just have this matter dropped by resigning, he added.

The JCP spokesman said he will immediately start working with a wide range of Tokyo residents to select a candidate for the gubernatorial election reportedly scheduled for February next year who will be able to reform the current policy line of the Tokyo Metropolitan Assembly.

Stating that the primary role of a local government is to improve residents’ welfare, livelihood, and education services, Ichida said, “The major election issue will be whether to protect people’s livelihoods and well-being.”

Ichida stressed that the JCP will work hard to inform voters of the need to establish a Tokyo without U.S. military facilities, firmly complying with the Constitution, and defending Tokyo’s autonomy, so that it can send out a message of peace to the rest of the country.
