JCP-backed candidate in Tokyo gubernatorial race calls for Tokyo-Beijing-Seoul peace conference

January 12, 2013
Akahata Sunday edition

The Tokyo gubernatorial election candidate supported by the Japanese Communist Party and various civic groups is calling for the holding of a peace conference with the capital cities of China and South Korea.

Publishing his campaign platform on January 6, former President of the Japan Federation of Bar Associations Utsunomiya Kenji said, “It will be important to put forth a commitment by Tokyo to maintain Japan’s Constitution and work for peace,” and proposed organizing a “cities of peace” meeting in Tokyo with the heads of Beijing and Seoul.

He stated that he will work for the 2020 Tokyo Olympics to be an opportunity leading to peace in Asia. The lawyer-turned candidate also said he will seek an environmentally-friendly Summer Games that will be welcomed by all the sufferers of the 2011 Great East Japan Disaster and the subsequent nuclear crisis in Japan.

He stated that the birth of the rightist Abe Cabinet had given him the push he needed to decide to run for Tokyo governor, expressing his concern over the prime minister’s visits to the Yasukuni Shrine and the recent moves to put the country back in the direction of the militarist past.

In contrast to Abe, who ignores people’s livelihoods and aspires for making Japan “the best nation in the world to engage in corporate activities”, Utsunomiya promised he will strive for the establishment of “the best metropolis in the world for workers”.

Regarding the money scandal involving former Governor Inose Naoki which triggered the coming election slated for February 9, Utsunomiya said he will work very hard to reveal the whole picture and build a Tokyo where money-tainted special-interest policies can no longer go unchallenged.

His basic policies are: make Tokyo the best city in the world to work and live; attach importance on environment, disaster prevention and damage reduction; look to a nuclear-free society and economy staring with Tokyo; promote schools free from political control and bullies; and protect the Constitution to send a message of peace to Asia by putting a stop to the Abe government abuses.
