Japanese and South Korean parliamentarians’ unions on July 10 held a joint annual assembly in Tokyo, reaffirming Japan’s commitment to its adherence to the 1993 Kono Statement and the 1995 Murayama Statement.
The assembly, with 150 legislators of both countries attending, unanimously adopted a joint declaration which calls for behavior befitting the spirit of the two statements.
The participants stated in their joint declaration that they will make efforts for the implementation of measures to recover the honor of victims of the “comfort women” system and to help heal their emotional pain.
Both unions in the declaration expressed their expectation for Japan’s Prime Minister Abe to adhere to the basic position of the Kono/Murayama Statements, admitting to the Japanese Imperial Army’s involvement in the comfort women system and expressing deep remorse over the past war of aggression.
The two parliamentarians’ leagues agreed on further efforts to work to increase their cooperation in the 21st century based on mutual trust. They also confirmed that they will explore ways to have “hate speech” campaigns taking place in Japan halted.
Japanese Communist Party members of the Diet Ichida Tadayoshi, Koike Akira, Kokuta Keiji, and Kasai Akira took part in the Japan-ROK joint assembly and the dinner party, exchanging greetings with the Korean lawmakers.
