Iranian ambassador to Japan denies possibility of crisis in Hormuz Strait

July 25, 2015
Regarding Prime Minister Abe Shinzo’s argument about a possibility of a “strait crisis” where the Strait of Hormuz is blockaded by sea mines, the Iranian ambassador to Japan has said to the press that such a crisis emerging is impossible.

During the Diet deliberation on the proposed war legislation, PM Abe repeatedly cited a hypothetical situation where Japan faces a stoppage of crude oil transport from the Middle East because sea mines are laid in the Hormuz Strait. He claimed that Japan needs to establish the war legislation to allow the Japanese Self-Defense Forces to sweep the mines from the sea in such a situation.

Iranian Ambassador to Japan Reza Nazarahari on July 23 held a news conference at the Japan National Press Club in Tokyo nine days after Iran reached a nuclear deal with six world powers including the U.S. He stated that the agreement opens the way for the return of Iran to the international community.

The ambassador pointed out that with the nuclear deal being reached, Iran now has the prospect having economic sanctions which halved the country’s oil exports lifted. He stressed that as seeking to sell more oil abroad, Iran has no reason to block the Hormuz Strait.

The ambassador’s remark shows how groundless Abe’s argument about the war bills is.
