2007 February 28 - March 6 [ELECTION]

All JCP candidates won local elections in February

March 2, 2007
All 34 Japanese Communist Party candidates won local assembly elections held in seven cities and 13 towns in February.

On February 18, a JCP candidate for the Kosa Town Assembly election in Kumamoto Prefecture polled more votes than any other candidates. She failed to win in the previous election four years ago by 26 votes, but this time she received 3.1 times more votes than before. A local newspaper wrote that her success deserves special mention in light of the residents’ strong conservative tendency.

Since the beginning of this year, 64 out of 69 JCP candidates won local assembly elections in 42 electoral districts, placing the JCP at the top among parties; the Liberal Democratic Party won 14 seats, the Komei Party 41, the Democratic Party 3, and the Social Democratic Party 5.

In these assemblies the percentage of JCP members has risen to 8.34 percent from 6.27 percent.
