Progressive forum celebrates 40th anniversary of its founding

May 16, 2021
The National Association for a Peaceful, Democratic, and Progressive Japan (Kakushinkon) on May 15 held a gathering in Tokyo to celebrate the 40th anniversary of its founding.

Prior to the celebratory gathering, the 40th general assembly took place, looking back on the history of its movement and affirming the determination to develop "cooperation between concerned citizens and opposition parties" in the coming general election in order to help realize a people-oriented coalition government consisting of the present opposition parties.

Japanese Communist Party Chair Shii Kazuo delivered a commemorative speech at the celebration, talking about the achievements and prospects of "cooperation between concerned citizens and opposition parties" as well as about future roles Kakushinkon should play.

Shii said, "Aiming for a change of government in the forthcoming House of Representatives election, let us work together to establish a new coalition government consisting of the current opposition parties!"

Essayist Ebina Kayoko, Professor at Sophia University Nakano Koichi of the Civil Alliance, and Tokyo Shimbun journalist Mochizuki Isoko offered their congratulations. Hata Jiro, who had won as a united opposition candidate in the House of Councilors by-election in Nagano Prefecture, sent a message in solidarity to the celebration.

The Association for a Peaceful, Democratic and Progressive Japan (Kakushinkon) was formed at the call of the JCP in 1980 for the purpose of promoting solidarity with a wide range of people, regardless of political or ideological differences, to achieve the common objectives of peace, democracy, and better living standards. Kakushinkon is increasing ties between nonpartisan people and the JCP, and developing as a movement for building a progressive majority that supports a democratic change in politics. Many public figures are collaborating with Kakushinkon and contributing to heightening public awareness.
