17,000 people in ehuman chainf call for removal of Futenma base
On May 16, about 17,000 people braved the strong winds and rain to surround the U.S. Marine Corps Futenma Air Station with a ghuman chainh, calling for the removal of the base and opposing its relocation within Okinawa.

Townspeople choose JCP mayor
Another communist mayor has come into power. In the Asahi Town mayoral election in Toyama Prefecture on May 16, Waki Shigeo, former town assembly member of the Japanese Communist Party, was elected to steer the town administration over the conservative incumbent. Supported by a citizensf group, Waki has become the 9th JCP mayor in Japan.

Shii again calls on NPT conference leader to strive for negotiation to ban nuclear weapons
Japanese Communist Party Chair Shii Kazuo announced at the Japan National Press Club on May 16 that he sent a letter to NPT Review Conference President Libran N. Cabactulan, again calling for the presidentfs effort to start international negotiations for a ban on nuclear weapons.
