    The CEDAW in its concluding observations recommended for the fourth time that Japan improve a wide range of areas, including legal reform regarding the choice of surnames for married couples as well as the early ratification of the Optional Protocol.

    The Tokyo High Court ruled that the existing legal provisions disallowing same-sex marriage constitute a violation of Article 14 and Article 24 of the Constitution. JCP Executive Committee Chair Tamura welcomed the ruling.
