Shii meets with outgoing South Korean ambassador

April 16, 2019
Japanese Communist Party Chair Shii Kazuo on April 15 received a visit by outgoing South Korean ambassador to Japan Lee Su-hoon at the JCP head office.

Lee expressed his gratitude for the good discussions and exchanges of views he had with Shii during his 1.5-year tenure on such issues as peacebuilding in Northeast Asia and Japan-ROK relations, adding that he hopes for the JCP's continued cooperation in efforts to promote the peace process on the Korean Peninsula and develop Japan-ROK friendly ties.

Shii in response appreciated Lee's service in Japan, wishing Lee every success in his new position upon his return to South Korea.

In respect to denuclearization and peacebuilding on the Korean Peninsula, Shii said, "It is important to make a comprehensive agreement which specifies these goals and implement the agreed-upon commitments step by step." Shii furthermore said that in order to improve Japan-ROK relations, Japan must sincerely reflect on its past colonial rule and demonstrate remorse by taking appropriate action.

Lee said, "To advance the peace process on the Korean Peninsula, cooperation and public opinion calling for peace both in South Korea and Japan are important."

Shii promised the JCP's continued commitment to the peacebuilding efforts by saying, "Global public opinion and movements seeking peace are the driving forces behind this process toward peace."

Shii then extended his sympathy to all the people affected by a massive forest fire that killed one person and injured many others in South Korea.
