1st A-bomb exhibit in Hawaii taking place
|
The first exhibit "Atomic Bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki" has been taking place at the USS Battleship Missouri Memorial in Pearl Harbor, Hawaii.
The USS Missouri is where representatives of the Japanese government in September 1945 signed the Instrument of Surrender.
The exhibition hosted by the USS Missouri Memorial Association in partnership with the atomic-bombed Japanese cities of Hiroshima and Nagasaki will be held until November 30.
The two cities have held similar exhibitions in 51 cities in 19 countries since 1995.
The exhibit features photos, personal belongings, and artifacts of victims (Hibakusha), and paper cranes folded by Sasaki Sadako from her sickbed before dying of acute leukemia which stemmed from exposure to radiation in Hiroshima. The event also showcases paper cranes presented from former U.S. President Barack Obama during his visit to Hiroshima in 2016.
The Hiroshima Peace Memorial Museum said it hopes that the exhibit in the most influential nuclear-weapons state will be an opportunity for as many people as possible, including tourists, to see the realities of A-bombings and think of world peace again.
