Japan-proposed negative N-resolution receives record-low support in UN

November 14, 2020

The Japan-proposed draft resolution which sets the elimination of nuclear weapons as the "ultimate goal" received nine countries less in support than last year in the United Nations First Committee. Minister of Foreign Affairs Motegi Toshimitsu on November 13 announced this outcome.

According to materials provided by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs to Japanese Communist Party member of the Lower House Kokuta Keiji, the number of countries voting for Japan's draft resolution was 139, the smallest number in the past 18 years.

Kokuta said that Japan's resolution states nothing about the nuclear-weapons ban treaty, and that only the U.S. and the U.K. among nuclear-weapons states supported the resolution.
