Japan’s multipartisan parliamentary group talks online with Myanmar’s civilian government

May 27, 2021
A supra-partisan group of Japanese parliamentarians supporting democratization of Myanmar held an online meeting on May 26 with Myanmar’s pro-democracy “National Unity Government” which exists in parallel with the military junta.

Japanese Communist Party Secretariat Head Koike Akira (House of Councilors) and Inoue Satoshi (House of Councilors) took part in the virtual meeting.

Delivering speeches on behalf of the NUG, Vice President Duwa Lashi La and Prime Minister Mahn Winn Khaing stressed that what the NUG seeks is to establish a democratic country based on a genuine federal system. Pointing out that other countries’ economic activities in Myanmar play a role as financial backing for the military, the NUG officials said that as long as this situation remains, the military rule will continue. They expressed their hope that world leaders will decide to break relations with the Myanmar military.

Journalist Kitazumi Yuki, who was recently released from detention by the Myanmar military, also participated in the meeting. Stating that he was encouraged by Myanmar citizens’ continuing protests against the military junta, Kitazumi said that he demanded that the Japanese government in its policy toward Myanmar take a pro-citizens stance.

The online conference adopted a statement in which the Japanese parliamentarians’ league and the NUG agreed to work together to realize a democratic regime in Myanmar.

The statement made a 9-point request to the Japanese government and the international community, including denying the legitimacy of the military regime born of the coup d’etat, acknowledging that only the Committee Representing Pyidaungsu Hluttaw (CRPH) has the legitimacy to govern Myanmar, and opening an official communication channel with the CRPH.
