4 opposition parties along with Civil Alliance agree on common agenda

September 9, 2021

Four opposition parties, including the Japanese Communist Party, and the Civil Alliance on September 8 agreed on a common agenda which aims to establish a new coalition government.

JCP Chair Shii Kazuo, Constitutional Democratic Party of Japan leader Edano Yukio, Social Democratic Party leader Fukushima Mizuho, and "Reiwa Shinsengumi" party leader Yamamoto Taro signed an agreement regarding opposition parties' common policies recommended by the Civil Alliance.

Outlines of the common agenda are as follows:

- restore policies based on the Constitution;
- strengthen coronavirus countermeasures based on scientific grounds;
- rectify economic disparities and reduce poverty;
- shift toward earth-friendly sources of energy and toward a territorially-distributed economic system;
- realize a free and fair society based on gender equality;
- never permit personalization of power and establish fair and transparent government authorities

At the JCP head office, JCP Chair Shii said to the press corps, "The opposition parties have now agreed upon a common agenda. Next, we should enter into negotiations on electoral cooperation and government cooperation as quicky as possible."

Pointing out that the agreement on the common agenda calls for the creation of a government which carries out policies in common, Shii said, "Now that the four leaders have signed this agreement, we should discuss in what form the JCP cooperates in a new government. An agreement on JCP cooperation in a new government will lead to true cooperation among opposition parties in future elections."
