Lower House adopts resolution on human rights in China

February 2, 2022
The House of Representatives in its plenary session held on February 1 adopted a "resolution regarding the serious human rights situation in China such as in Xinjiang " with majority votes, including the Japanese Communist Party.

The resolution, however, lacks specifics. It simply mentions that the international community is concerned about the "serious human rights situation" in regard to religious freedom violations and forcible detentions in Xinjiang, Tibet, Southern Mongolia, and Hong Kong.

Prior to the plenary session, JCP representative Shiokawa Tetsuya noted that the Chinese government has been restricting and infringing on human rights by cracking down on citizens who call for democracy in Hong Kong and on ethnic minorities in the Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region. He stated that the Chinese government neglects to fully comply with international human rights commitments such as the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, the International Covenants on Human Rights, and the Vienna Declaration.

Shiokawa pointed out, "The resolution fails to identify these points," adding, "The resolution should clearly denounce human rights abuses by the Chinese government."

He demanded that the Japanese government, through coolheaded diplomacy and criticism based on international law, wok to persuade the Chinese government to investigate human rights violations.
