JCP submits to UNHCR more than 20 million yen in support for people in Ukraine

March 11, 2022
The Japanese Communist Party on March 10 submitted to the Japan Office of the UN High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) about 20.25 million yen in support for Ukrainian refugees and internally displaced persons (IDPs).

JCP Chair Shii Kazuo and Vice Chair Tamura Tomoko met with Nacken Ritsu, deputy representative at UNHCR, and Kawai Masayuki, secretary-general of Japan for UNHCR, in a Dietmembers' office building in Tokyo and handed them the donations for people in Ukraine which the JCP had collected.

Shii said, "In the Akahata issue dated March 6, we called on Akahata readers to raise money for people in Ukraine and we received 20,245,368 yen from around the country in a short amount of time." He also said that many doners in the correspondence column of the transfer slip wrote messages such as "Please use this money for food for children and people in Ukraine."

Nacken and Kawai in response expressed gratitude for the contributions. They explained that more than 100 UNHCR staff members in Ukraine are delivering aid under difficult conditions in cooperation with local NGO members.

According to the UN, the number of refugees from Ukraine to neighboring countries and the number of IDPs are expected to increase to four million and 120 million, respectively. The UN appeals for 1.7 billion U.S. dollars to deliver support.
