JCP 29th Congress will be delayed in order to fully prepare for next spring’s nationwide local elections

August 2, 2022

The Japanese Communist Party Central Committee held its 6th Plenum on August 1 at the JCP head office in Tokyo.

Chair Shii Kazuo gave a report on behalf of the Executive Committee and proposed postponing the JCP 29th Congress which is scheduled to be held in January 2023 for one year until January 2024 in order to fully prepare the party to achieve a major advance in the nationwide simultaneous local elections to be held in April next year.

Shii pointed out that the JCP Constitution allows the postponement of a Party Congress by Central Committee decision under special circumstances.

Shii noted that the convening of a Congress will include personnel changes in the Central Committee as well as in JCP organizations at the prefectural and district levels. He said that the Central Committee judged that the introduction of such a change just prior to the nationwide local elections would be detrimental and thus decided to propose the postponement based on the party Constitution.

In addition, Shii proposed conducting a “special campaign” for creating a stronger JCP from August until December. He called on JCP members to work hard to recruit more than 5,000 new party members and increase the readership of Akahata daily and Sunday editions by 12,000 and by 52,000, respectively.
