Citizens-backed opposition candidate wins in Tokyo Metropolitan Assembly by-election in Tachikawa City

October 17, 2023
In a Tokyo Metropolitan Assembly by-election to fill two vacant seats in Tachikawa City on October 15, a candidate who was supported by opposition parties, including the Japanese Communist Party, defeated a Liberal Democratic Party opponent and won a seat, following the victory of a citizens-opposition parties candidate in the Tachikawa City mayoral election. Another winner was a “Tomin First no Kai” candidate.

Suzuki Retsu, 49, ran on an official Constitutional Democratic Party of Japan ticket for the by-election to represent Tachikawa City. The JCP, the Social Democratic Party, the “Reiwa Shinsengumi” party, Seikatsusha Net, and the Greens supported him during the election campaign.

After the election, Suzuki said to his campaigners and supporters at his campaign office, “Joint efforts made between concerned citizens and opposition parties have resulted in my victory. I’ll hang on with all my might as a Tokyo metropolitan assemblyperson.” He expressed his determination to realize his election promises such as implementing a free school lunch program, taking PFAS countermeasures, and eliminating people who have no choice but to work under non-regular contracts.
