JCP Kira speaks at Tokyo Pride 2025 event

Japanese Communist Party Secretariat Head Koike Akira and JCP member of the House of Councilors Kira Yoshiko took part in the “Tokyo Pride 2025” event which was held in Tokyo’s Yoyogi Park on June 8.
Along with several other cross-party lawmakers, Kira spoke onstage at the event, promising LGBTQ+ and other sexual minorities that she will continue to be committed to working in the Diet to pass legislation permitting same-sex marriage. She called on the audience, “Let’s join hands to create a society where we, diverse individuals, can be ourselves and live happily without discrimination!”
This year’s Tokyo Pride theme is “Same Life, Same Rights,” calling for a society where everyone’s right to life is equally protected without discrimination or prejudice.
About 15,000 citizens paraded through Shibuya and Harajuku districts. Many pedestrians and shoppers along the streets waved to participants in the parade and some shouted, “Happy Pride!”
A 52-year-old man who participated in the event with his same-sex partner has been with the partner for 30 years. Noting that five high courts nationwide have ruled against the government in lawsuits involving same-sex marriage, he said, “The national legislature should establish a ‘marriage equality law’ without waiting for a Supreme Court judgement.”
