Japanese Communist Party International Commission head Ogata Yasuo attended an international conference held in Berlin on June 23 and 24, hosted by the Rosa Luxemburg Foundation (RLF) to discuss ways to counter power politics.
The conference took place with 75 people, mainly researchers and university professors, from Europe participating. Representatives of the German Left Party (Die Linke) and the Belgium Workers’ Party were also present at the conference.
Chairman of the RLF Executive Board Heinz Bierbaum gave the opening speech. He criticized Israel’s attacks on Iran as clear violations of international law and the U.S. intervention in Iran for making the situation worse. He also condemned Israel’s genocidal acts in Gaza. He appealed for the need to boost grassroots efforts to oppose the militarization of Europe, and called for civil society’s contributions to creating a peaceful and just world order.
Ogata spoke at a workshop discussing civil society’s initiatives for peace. In his statement, he explained the JCP proposal for peace building in East Asia and the party’s activities in this regard. He stressed that in order to create peace based on international law and multilateral cooperation and ensure civil society engagement in foreign affairs, it is necessary to strengthen international solidarity.
