Tamura at New Year meeting calls for JCP that stands firm on principle, not swayed by the flow of times

January 6, 2026

Japanese Communist Party Executive Committee Chair Tamura Tomoko on January 5 delivered an address at the party’s New Year assembly held at the JCP head office, urging all JCP members to uphold sound principles, expand national cooperation, propel the party forward, and not be swept away by the tide of the times.

At the outset of her speech, Tamura offered her condolences for the passing of former JCP Central Committee Chair Fuwa Tetsuzo. She paid tribute to him and extended her gratitude for his political and theoretical contributions.

Tamura condemned the United States for abducting Venezuelan President Maduro and his wife and for taking them to a New York detention center after a huge military operation in Caracas on January 3. Describing this as “an outrageous act that tramples upon the UN Charter and international law,” she demanded their release and an immediate halt to U.S. strikes against Venezuela.

Turning to economic issues, Tamura pointed out that under LDP politics, the “stock price supremacy” which prioritizes shareholder interests above anything else, has been exploiting workers’ wages and working hours. She stated that this distortion must be corrected in order to achieve substantial pay hikes and shorter working hours as well as to develop Japan’s economy and industries.

Tamura noted that the Takaichi government by touting “close cooperation in the Japan-U.S. military alliance” is eagerly pushing ahead with a massive military expansion as demanded by the U.S. Trump administration. She warned, “Such a path could expose the Japanese people to the risk of war and could even isolate the country from the rest of Asia and the rest of the world.” In contrast to the Takaichi regime, she added, the JCP is committed to actively engaging in peace diplomacy based on the JCP “Proposal for Peacebuilding in East Asia -- In Collaboration with ASEAN”.

Furthermore, Tamura mentioned that the JCP has been holding discussions with other political parties, organizations, and concerned citizens to build a “new national and democratic alliance” in order to confront the conservative and right-wing coalition. She said that the female leaders and secretaries-general of the JCP, the Social Democratic Party, the New Socialist Party, and the “Okinawa Whirlwind” took to the streets together on December 26 last year to demonstrate their commitment to cooperating with each other to oppose the planned military buildup and to defend the country’s pacifist Constitution. She declared with determination, “Now, our counterattack begins!”
