‘Nominal managers’ sue for overtime pay

June 1, 2011
Three “nominal managers” on May 31 filed a lawsuit against Janome Sewing Machine Co., Ltd. with the Tokyo District Court, seeking 32 million yen in back pay.

They claim that the company, which is listed on the Tokyo Stock Exchange, keeps them in managerial positions in order to be immune from paying overtime allowances, and that such a method of underpaying is illegal.

The three branch office managers argued that they have been forced to work long hours and shoulder various kinds of jobs from taking care of customers to repairing sewing machines. They claim that they are not actual managers handling management jobs.
