Use fund for anti-radiation measures, not Olympics: JCP in Tokyo

September 29, 2011
Japanese Communist Party Tokyo Assembly member Oyama Tomoko on September 28 urged Governor Ishihara Shintaro to use Tokyo’s budget to contain radiation contamination from the Fukushima nuclear accident rather than to bid to host the 2020 Olympics.

At a metropolitan assembly meeting on that day, Oyama expressed her opposition to Tokyo’s bid to host the 2020 Olympic Games. She criticized the governor for trying to use the Olympics as a driving force to create a special business zone to invite foreign capital investment as well as to promote large public works, including the Tokyo Gaikan Expressway project and port expansion projects.

“The Tokyo government should use its budget to support disaster victims, help reconstruct the disaster-hit region, contain radiation contamination, and create a more quake-resistant city,” said Oyama.

The JCP representative demanded that Tokyo measure radiation doses at more locations in schools and parks, remove contaminated soil, measure radiation in food, provide support for evacuees from the disaster-hit region, and improve quake- and fire-resistant capabilities of areas where wooden houses are concentrated.
