Naha City assy. adopts anti-Ospray resolution

May 26, 2012
The Naha City Assembly in Okinawa on May 25 unanimously adopted a resolution demanding the cancellation of the plan to temporarily deploy the U.S. Marine Corps’ MV-22 Osprey aircraft to the city.

The resolution came out in response to a news report that the U.S. military would conduct trial flights at its Naha Military Port prior to the full deployment of 12 vertical takeoff-and-landing MV-22 Osprey aircraft at the U.S. Futenma base in Ginowan City.

The resolution argues that the MV-22 Osprey aircraft has frequently had accidents and mechanical failures, and that transporting, assembling, and testing such trouble-ridden aircraft will endanger the safety of Naha citizens.

The city assembly has already adopted two unanimous resolutions in opposition to the planned deployment of MV-22s. The most recent resolution states, “It is also intolerable that the Japanese government has completely ignored the two resolutions.”
