Japanese doctors and dentists protest US subcritical N-test

September 26, 2012
A group of 104,000 Japanese doctors and dentists on September 24 sent a letter of protest to U.S. President Barack Obama against a new type of nuclear test.

The Japanese Medical and Dental Practitioners for Improvement of Medical Care (Hodanren) in the letter asserts, “We, doctors and dentists who are to protect people’s lives, protest against the new type of nuclear test and demand the cancellation of additional tests.”

Pointing out that “Japanese people, doctors, and dentists are concerned about the enormous amount of radiation emitted in the wake of the Fukushima nuclear accident last year,” Hodanren expresses its hope that the United States will withdraw its nuclear weapons development program and ratify the Comprehensive Test Ban Treaty (CTBT) at the United Nations.”

The letter ends by stating, “We call on you to move forward to the realization of a treaty banning all nuclear weapons.”

The U.S. Department of Energy carried out a subcritical nuclear test at the Sandia National Laboratories in New Mexico sometime between April and June.
