U.S. nuclear submarine enters Sasebo despite revelation of radioactive leak at the same port in March

August 5, 2008
A U.S. nuclear-powered attack submarine entered Sasebo Port in Nagasaki Prefecture on August 4, three days after the U.S. government admitted that another similar nuclear-powered submarine, the Houston, may have leaked radioactivity at the same port in March.
About 20 people from the Sasebo Peace Committee and the Sasebo Council against A & H Bombs (Gensuikyo) staged a protest at the quay against the arrival of the 6,900-ton USS “La Jolla.”
Sasebo Gensuikyo’s Yamashita Chiaki called on the participants to direct protests at the U.S. forces for disregarding citizens concerns about the dangers of possible radioactive leaks as well as at the Japanese government for allowing the submarine’s entry despite the collapse of the “safety myths” argument about U.S. nuclear-powered submarines. – Akahata, August 5, 2008
