Shii talks with Kazakh ambassador

January 12, 2013
Japanese Communist Party Chair Shii Kazuo on January 11 discussed issues related to nuclear weapons with Kazakh Ambassador to Japan Akylbek A. Kamaldinov at the JCP head office in Tokyo.

The ambassador talked about his country’s experience in closing the Semipalatinsk nuclear test site in 1991 as well as removing nuclear weapons, both owned by the former Soviet Union. He also introduced Kazakhstan’s recent initiative for the conclusion of the Central Asian Nuclear-Weapon-Free Zone (CANWFZ) Treaty.

Referring to his 2009 visit to Kazakhstan where he learned about the extensive damage caused by nuclear weapons tests, Shii said that he paid attention to the Kazakh foreign minister’s support expressed at the U.N. General Assembly in September to U.N. Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon’s proposal for a treaty banning nuclear weapons. Shii expressed his hope that Kazakhstan and the JCP will continue to exchange information and work together on these issues.
