Kanagawa governor suspends subsidy for North Korean schools

February 15, 2013
Kanagawa Governor Kuroiwa Yuji on February 13 announced that he will not earmark a 63 million yen subsidy for five North Korean schools in the prefecture in reaction to the nuclear test conducted by North Korea on February 12.

At a press conference, Kuroiwa criticized North Korea’s nuclear test as an outrage in disregard of international opinion and a hostile action against the United States, and said, “The action is also a challenge to the Japan-U.S. security structure. This cannot be overlooked.”

Kato Makoto, representing a liaison center of education-related movements in the prefecture, expressed his clear opposition to Kuroiwa’s decision. “North Korea’s action should not be condoned, but sanctions against the country and support to ensure children’s right to learn should be separated. It is truly irrelevant for the prefecture to impose sanctions against children,” he stressed.
