A-bomb survivors in Hiroshima sit-in against US nuclear test

August 23, 2013
Hibakusha (atomic bomb survivors) and peace activists in Hiroshima Prefecture on August 22 held a sit-in protest against a reported nuclear weapon test conducted by the United States on May 15.

This action at the Peace Memorial Park in Hiroshima City was organized by Hiroshima chapters of the Japan Council against A & H Bombs (Japan Gensuikyo) and the Japan Confederation of A- & H-Bombs Sufferers Organizations (Nihon Hidankyo).

Takahashi Nobuo representing Hiroshima Gensuikyo said before 60 participants, “The major current in the world is calling for the abolition of nuclear weapons. The nuclear test throws cold water on this and is unacceptable.”

Participants approved a statement of protest to be sent to U.S. President Barack Obama as well as statements to Prime Minister Abe Shinzo and Foreign Minister Kishida Fumio demanding that they protest against the U.S. nuclear test.

Japan Gensuikyo and Nihon Hidankyo have also sent a letter of protest to the U.S. president.
