Court orders Tokyo to pay 17 Muslims Y90 mil for defamation

January 16, 2013
The Tokyo District Court on January 15 ordered the Tokyo Metropolitan government to pay 17 Muslims about 90 million yen in compensation for defamation.

These Muslims were suing both the national government and the Tokyo Metropolitan government as the responsible parties, complaining that the Public Security Bureau of the Tokyo Metropolitan Police Department had monitored them and collected their private data and friendship relations.

The court dismissed the claim against the national government.

In 2010, supposed “global terrorist” information in an internal police document was leaked on the Internet.

The court blamed lax supervision of information by the police causing the leakage, but ruled that the monitoring of Muslim civilians by security agents is not illegal.
