Okinawa’s town assembly unanimously adopts resolution against US base construction

January 23, 2014
The Kadena Town Assembly in Okinawa unanimously adopted a resolution on January 22 in protest against Governor Nakaima Hirokazu’s approval given to the central government’s request to reclaim land for the construction of a new U.S. military base.

This is the first time that a resolution of this kind was passed unanimously at a municipal assembly in the prefecture.

The resolution urges the Japanese and U.S. governments to give up their plan to “relocate” the U.S. Marine Corps Futenma Air Station in Ginowan City to the Henoko district of Nago City.

The assembly also carried out another resolution without dissent to protest against a string of crashes of U.S. military helicopters and to demand a halt to their flight training exercises in Okinawa.
