Japan’s antinuke NGOs go to Mexico for meeting on humanitarian impact of nukes

January 31, 2014
A group of representatives from Japanese anti-nuclear weapon NGOs and atomic bomb survivors’ (Hibakusha) organizations will go to Mexico in mid-February to participate in an international meeting on the inhumanity of nuclear weapons, group leaders announced on January 30 at a news conference in the Diet building.

The Mexican government will host the Conference on the Humanitarian Impact of Nuclear Weapons in Nayarit, the second conference to focus on this theme after the first one held in Oslo last March.

Tanaka Terumi, secretary general of the Japan Confederation of A- and H-Bomb Sufferers Organizations (Nihon Hidankyo), said he will speak about how human beings would be affected if a nuclear bomb was dropped nearby.

Tomonaga Masao, director of the Japanese Red Cross Nagasaki Atomic Bomb Hospital, said he will report as a medical scientist on the long term effects of atomic bomb radiation on the human body.

Several Hibakusha and grandchildren of Hibskuahsa will talk about their experiences and sufferings at a Hibakusha session led by the NGOs at the outset of the Nayarit conference.
