Comeback JCP in NPP-hosting town assembly calls for end to nuclear power generation

Coming back to the assembly of Fukui’s Mihama Town which hosts Kansai Electric Power Company’s three nuclear power plants after an absence of 11 years, the Japanese Communist Party on March 26 urged the town mayor to withdraw from pro-nuclear power generation policies.

JCP candidate Kawamoto Takeshi won in the assembly election at the beginning of March and as a result, the party regained the seat that it lost 11 years ago.

At a plenary meeting of the assembly, the newly elected JCP assembly person during his question time pointed out that while the situation at the Tokyo Electric Power Company’s Fukushima Daiichi nuclear accident is deteriorating, Fukushima victims are experiencing further hardships. He cited the fact that Germany has been improving the health of the nation’s job market through the government’s decommissioning projects.

Kawamoto also reported that many Mihama town people are expressing concern about nuclear power generation and calling for a shift to the use of renewable energy.

He called on Town Mayor Yamaguchi Jitaro to make a decision to request KEPCO to close all nuclear power stations in the town without delay.

The mayor replied, “Nuclear power is necessary. You and I are standing on totally opposite sides.”
