JCP pushes gov’t to meet Hiroshima landslide victims’ requests

August 29, 2014
Japanese Communist Party Dietmembers are demanding that the government take necessary support measures for victims of the torrential rain and resultant landslides which killed more than 70 people in Hiroshima a week ago.

As of August 26, in Hiroshima City, 652 families or 1,448 people are living in temporary shelters.

JCP lawmakers, Miyamoto Takeshi (House of Representatives) and Nihi Sohei (House of Councilors), at a separate committee meeting on August 28, stated (based on their on-site survey) that the central government should take the initiative in providing housing for the sufferers and in promoting work to remove the rubble and debris.

A huge amount of mud, rocks, trees, debris, and vehicles flowed into residential areas. The two representatives emphasized the need for the authorities to initiate the clean-up process and not to leave it to individual efforts.

Miyamoto urged the government to immediately designate local inns, hotel rooms, and privately-rented housing as temporary shelters so that the local government concerned can urgently secure proper evacuation residences for the victims.

Based on the demands they heard from the evacuees, JCP members of the Hiroshima City Assembly also made similar requests to the city government.
