Kyoto residents protest sudden transport of US military radar equipment

Kyoto residents on October 21 protested against the sudden transport of X-band radar equipment to a planned site for a new U.S. radar facility in Kyotango City in Kyoto.

On that day in the early morning more than 30 people waged a protest near the construction site.

Later on the same day, the Japanese Communist Party Kyoto Prefectural Assembly members’ group made a representation to the prefectural government, objecting to the transfer of the radar equipment and calling for the cancellation of the construction plan.

After the presentation, the JCP lawmakers’ group, together with a Kyoto residents’ group opposing U.S. bases, held a rally in front of the prefectural government office. At the rally, more than 100 people voiced their opposition, shouting, “We want no U.S. bases in Kyoto!”

Tsuji Masahide of the residents’ group said, “I’m sure that our continued protest will block the radar facility construction. Let’s keep protesting.”
