JCP opposes city’s approval of restarting Sendai nuclear power plant

Kagoshima’s Satsumasendai City Assembly on October 28 adopted by majority vote a statement calling for an early restart of the Sendai Nuclear Power Plant located in the city. A Japanese Communist Party member and three other lawmakers voted against the statement.

In deliberation before the vote, JCP assembly person Inoue Katsuhiro said, “To decide to depart from nuclear power generation will pave the way for healthier local economies.”

After the approval, Mayor Iwakiri Hideo expressed his support for the state policy of restarting the operations of NPPs.

Pro-NPP moves by the city assembly and the mayor have provoked citizens’ fierce criticism.

A woman, who observed the assembly meeting angrily, said, “Why did they need to make such a hasty decision? I feel angry about the city assembly neglecting to conduct thorough discussions.”

Torihara Ryoko, who heads a citizens’ group opposing nuclear power generation, stressed, “Local residents have yet to give consent to the restart of the Sendai plant. The approval is unacceptable as it fails to reflect the public will. We will do our utmost to block the move to reactivate the Sendai NPP.”
