JCP Kasai condemns Kagoshima governor for approving restart of Sendai NPP

November 8, 2014
Following the Kagoshima governor’s approval to the reactivation of the Sendai nuclear power plant, Japanese Communist Party parliamentarian Kasai Akira, who heads the party’s task force on nuclear power generation and energy issues, on November 7 commented that the governor’s decision is unacceptable.

In his comment, Kasai noted that in a series of briefings for residents which the Kagoshima prefectural government held at five municipalities near the plant, the residents cast a storm of concerns and questions on prefectural government officials. He also cited that assemblies of municipalities, such as Ichikikushikino City, which are located within a 30km area from the plant, adopted resolutions opposing the reactivation or even calling for the decommissioning of the plant. Kasai stressed that the required local consent has yet to be obtained.

Kasai said that it is unpardonable for the Abe government to push forward with the resumption of operations of the Sendai plant by pretending to succeed in receiving local consent without providing appropriate explanation about issues regarding potential volcanic eruptions and proposed evacuation plans.

The JCP will continue working together with people inside and outside Kagoshima to stop the plant from going back online, Kasai added.
