Naha City Assembly demands halt to preparation work for US base construction

February 24, 2015
The assembly of Okinawa’s prefectural capital of Naha City approved a resolution on February 23 by majority vote pushing for the cancellation of the planned construction of a new U.S. military base in Nago City as well as the removal of the U.S. Marine Corps Futenma Air Station in Ginowan City.

The resolution was jointly proposed by five ruling political groups, including the Japanese Communist Party. It condemns the Abe government for pushing ahead with the drilling survey for the base construction in Nago’s Henoko coastal area in defiance of the strong local opposition which was clearly manifested in the series of local elections last year.

In a discussion over the resolution, Furugen Shigeharu, head of the JCP assemblypersons’ group, said, “We can never tolerate this government behavior infringing upon democracy.”
