Federation of municipal leaders’ A9As in Tohoku region adopts appeal calling for scrapping of war bills

May 23, 2015
The federation of municipal leaders’ Article 9 associations (A9As) in six prefectures in the Tohoku region at its 2nd general assembly held in Yamagata City on May 22 adopted an appeal opposing the war legislation-related bills which the Abe Cabinet recently submitted to the Diet.

The appeal stresses that war poses the greatest threat to municipal people’s lives and livelihoods. It criticized the Abe administration’s submission of the bills “as bringing about to the general public the greatest crisis in the postwar Japanese history” and “for seeking to turn the pacifist Constitution into a dead letter with a new constitutional interpretation.”

In the appeal, the local government leaders expressed their determination to kill the war bills in collaboration with more than 7,000 A9As across Japan in order to defeat any attempt which could drag Japan into other nation’s war. The appeal also called on all people and all local government leaders in Japan to join in a movement objecting to the bills.

The federation was established in May last year by A9As of leaders and former leaders of prefectural and municipal governments in the Tohoku region.
