2015 July 29 - August 4 [JCP]

All 7 JCP candidates win in Sendai City Assembly election

August 4, 2015
All seven Japanese Communist Party candidates received support from voters to their call for the scrapping of the war bills and won in the Sendai City Assembly election in Miyagi Prefecture on August 2.

While the voter turnout rate dropped by 4 percentage points to 36%, the JCP candidates obtained a total of 42,423 votes, up by 7,253 votes from the previous election four years ago. The party’s share of the total vote increased from 11% to 14%.

During the election campaign, the JCP candidates pledged to work hard to block the unconstitutional war bills from being enacted, protect the constitution, and to have the city government implement measures to improve citizens’ livelihoods and rebuild the lives of those who suffered from the 2011 massive earthquake and tsunami. Their election pledges attracted support from a wide range of the voters.

Meanwhile, the Liberal Democratic Party decreased its number of seats to 16 from its pre-election strength of 18. The Komei Party secured 9 seats, up from 8. A local daily, Kahoku Shimpo, on August 3 reported that the LDP faced a fierce public backlash against the government-proposed war bills.
