Mayors of Hiroshima and Nagasaki condemn N. Korea’s nuclear test

January 8, 2016
The mayors of Hiroshima and Nagasaki on January 6 issued statements condemning North Korean leader Kim Jong-un for conducting a nuclear test earlier in the same day.

Hiroshima Mayor Matsui Kazumi said in his statement, “On behalf of the A-bombed city of Hiroshima, I vehemently protest. I once again demand in the strongest possible terms for your country to immediately abandon nuclear weapons and all programs related to their development, and to engage in a diplomatic effort through dialogue and collaboration with global society.”

The letter of protest goes on to state, “Your action is not only in direct opposition to earnest efforts of the international community for nuclear disarmament and non-proliferation, but is callously trampling on our hibakusha’s ardent wish for peace, which was born from their suffering and deep sorrow. I am outraged and cannot tolerate this deed of violence.”

Nagasaki City Mayor Taue Tomihisa said in his statement that the latest H-bomb test, which is the fourth nuclear test carried out by North Korea, is increasingly threatening world peace and security. He went on to criticize the North’s action for riding roughshod over A-bomb survivors’ wish for “a world without nuclear weapons”.

Civic groups also published statements in protest. They include the New Japan Women’s Association (Shinfujin), the Japan Peace Committee (JPC), and the Japan P.E.N. Club.

Shinfujin Secretary General Takasugi Shun denounced North Korea’s act as an outrage violating past resolutions of the UN Security Council as well as past agreements regarding denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula.

JPC Secretary General Chisaka Jun pointed out in his comment that the nuclear test contributes to intensifying international tensions and a nuclear armaments race, and consequently further isolate North Korea from the global community.
