Shii welcomes new UNSC sanctions on North Korea

March 4, 2016
The United Nations Security Council on March 3 unanimously adopted a resolution imposing additional sanctions on North Korea over the nuclear test it conducted on January 6 and the launch of a de facto ballistic missile on February 7.

The Japanese Communist Party has been expressing its opinion that sanction resolutions by the UNSC are necessary to have North Korea sit at the negotiating table to discuss the curtailment of its nuclear weapons program.

Chair of the JCP Shii Kazuo on the same day issued a statement welcoming the latest UNSC resolution. The excerpts of his statement are as follows:

Despite a series of previous relevant UNSC resolutions, the implementation of sanctions imposed by past resolutions has been found to be insufficient. The international community is strongly required to fully undertake the new sanctions and to enhance their effectiveness.

It is important that the resolution states that it “[r]eaffirms its support to the Six Party Talks, calls for their resumption, and reiterates its support for the commitments set forth in the Joint Statement of 19 September 2005.”

Dialogue is the only way to resolve the nuclear issue of North Korea, and the Six-Party Talks is the most appropriate venue for engaging in diplomatic dialogue.

Our party once again calls on relevant countries to renew their political and diplomatic efforts to restart the Six-Party Talks in order to put North Korea’s nuclear issue back on the path to workable solutions through dialogue and have North Korea abandon its nuclear weapons program.
