JCP Motomura demands gov’t support for Kyushu quake victims to secure housing

April 24, 2016
Japanese Communist Party member of the House of Representatives Motomura Nobuko on April 22 at a House Land and Infrastructure Committee meeting urged the government to provide accommodation, including public housing units, to survivors of the continuing earthquakes hitting Kumamoto and Oita prefectures.

Motomura noted that in response to the JCP’s hearing survey, many disaster victims said that they are unable to live in their houses due to fears associated with the continuous aftershocks. She pointed out that they hope to find a place where they can at least feel safe and secure.

The JCP lawmaker asked about the progress of the government’s housing support measures which include the provision of housing units owned by local governments to disaster victims.

An official in charge of this issue at the Land and Infrastructure Ministry replied that in Kumamoto, 70 units of prefectural government-owned public housing and 50 units of city government-owned housing are ready to accept applications from disaster victims. In addition, the ministry will ensure making available about 2,400 public housing units across the Kyushu region, the official said. He went on to explain that the ministry began cooperating with the real estate sector in the disaster hit prefectures in order to supply privately-owned housing units to the disaster sufferers as part of public housing support efforts.

Motomura called for establishing a system so that disaster victims can receive counseling services and support regarding accommodation. She also stressed the need to make it easier for the victims to access information about the system.

Furthermore, Motomura pointed to the importance of providing proper support, such as bathing and toilet facilities, to people with disabilities in the disaster hit areas as they are suffering more hardships than ordinary people.
