JCP 28th Congress starts

The Japanese Communist Party 28th Congress started on January 14 at the JCP Izu Study Hall in Atami City, Shizuoka Prefecture.

At the 5-day Congress, the draft of partial amendments to the JCP Program, the draft of the Congress resolution on the party's political mission, and the draft of the Congress resolution on party building are expected to be adopted after in-depth discussion.

JCP Chair Shii Kazuo delivered the opening address followed by Azumi Jun (Diet affairs head of the Constitutional Democratic Party of Japan), Hirano Hirofumi (secretary general of the Democratic Party for the People), Yoshikawa Hajime (secretary general of the Social Democratic Party), Iha Yoichi (head of the Okinawa Whirlwind), Kada Yoshiko (head of the Hekisui-kai), and House of Representatives member Nakamura Kishiro who all gave speeches as honored guests, putting on display the ever-increasing joint struggle and unity among opposition parties.

As well as these guests, all 760 delegates and 117 observers together gave the rallying call of "Unite! Work together!" three times.

At the opening of the Congress, ambassadors and diplomats from nine foreign embassies (Iraq, Palestine, Hungary, East Timor, Vietnam, Botswana, Madagascar, Moldova, and Laos) were also present.

Many messages were offered such as by the governors of Iwate, Saitama, and Okinawa; local government mayors, representatives of various organizations, and overseas political parties and organizations.
